E D U C A T I O N A L   A D D E N D U M

I went abroad for one semester during graduate school, during which I had no printmaking facilities, so I focused on my drawings and digital works.  Upon return, I had a newfound appreciation for drawing that was long missed.  It helped me to reconnect with lithography.  I have also applied my knowledge of Photoshop to many of my prints.

At Clemson University, we had a visit from the NASAD accreditation board, so I was exposed to the under-workings involved in a NASAD review.  We displayed student work and also met with the review committee to discuss student requests as well as committee observations.

In undergrad, my BFA show was half printmaking and half drawing (oil pastels).  In addition to my printmaking courses, I developed my work in advanced drawing, advanced figure drawing, mixed media drawing, and bookmaking.  The subject matter of my undergraduate work always contained the human form, which has contributed to my knowledge of the figure, and how forms turn through space.  Because of this working knowledge, I feel confident that I could teach any of these courses.

Beginning Drawing/ Drawing Fundamentals/ Composition is designed to teach a grasp of basic visual technique and concept in drawing, reinforcing basic composition and design principles.  Students learn drawing techniques as a language for expression; as well as, how to critique and interpret artwork.  They are given the vocabulary to understand gesture, contour, visual measuring, perspective, chiaroscuro and value ranges, texture, and facial proportions.

In Advanced Drawing, students apply their refined drawing skills to create artwork that has conceptual basis. Their understanding of drawing as a form of art is developed through studio work, critiques, demonstrations, lectures, field trips, and independent research.

Visual Arts Studio teaches basic visual language, and how to critique and interpret artwork.  Non-art major students are challenged to develop creative thinking and design skills as a basis for further fine art studies.  Projects include drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and bookmaking.

With Beginning Drawing, Advanced Drawing, and Visual Arts Studio, other responsibilities include maintenance of the studio.  Since 60-80 students a semester share that one room, it is a cooperative effort to keep the space clean, and work with the other professors to organize and share the space, schedule critiques, etc.

In Beginning Printmaking, students learn basic skills and a short historical transition to today's contemporary context.  In the Spring semester, we focus on hard ground, soft ground, aquatint, collograph, stenciling, chine colle, a la poupee, relief, and bookmaking.  In the Fall, we teach traditional stone lithography, deletion, counter-etching, and silkscreen.  As an instructor, and as an assistant, classes included many demonstrations of these processes.

The Advanced Printmaking class, with three levels of students, also consists of demonstrations and exposure to more advanced processes, such as pronto plate, solar plate, image-on, and continued studies in aforementioned processes.  We further study the history of printmaking but focus more on its contemporary context.

With Beginning and Advanced Printmaking, other responsibilities include maintenance of the studio, such as cleaning, inventory, and bio-hazard waste removal.  Open studio is once a week, so students would come in and be supervised by either myself or another instructor.

In all classes, I have worked with many different types of students, from children, to young adults and adults, both art and non-art majors, within the university environment, as well as within my community art center.

“Grudge Match 3” was held during the Southern Graphics Council Conference.  All of the participants were members of SGC from around the U.S.  As the organizer for this exhibition, I was in charge of contacting Richmond Galleries to procure a venue.  After the venue was determined, I filed paperwork for all required permits for a reception in accordance with Virginia’s ABC Commission. Once in Richmond, all participants of the exhibit worked together to hang the show, prepare for the reception, and clean up afterwards.

"ONEart" is an art exhibition organized to benefit the national "ONE" campaign (www.one.org).  This campaign’s primary goal is to allocate one percent of the nation's budget towards alleviating poverty and AIDS around the world.  In May 2006, Clemson Mayor Larry Abernathy declared the city of Clemson to be an official "City of ONE."  In the same month, Clemson President James Barker signed a proclamation naming Clemson the first "University of ONE" in the country.  The ONE Campaign has become a very important cause for Clemson University and our community.  2007 was the first annual "ONEart" Exhibition.  As a consultant for the event, I helped to organize, with initial setup and invitations, marketing the exhibition (graphically and by word of mouth), and hanging the show.  We sold over 75% of the work.

As assistant gallery director, responsibilities include slide documentation; organizing national and regional juried, invitational, and student art exhibitions; compiling and utilizing large mailing lists; hanging exhibitions; and maintaining the gallery spaces.  Being non-profit, other duties consist of contacting local companies and organizations to request donations to support the galleries.

As an educator for Hands On! Regional Museum, I taught children about science, fine arts, and the humanities in a creative, hands-on manner.  I worked with the museum to develop educational programs for grades K-12, and also did murals to complement the educational exhibitions on display.

Frogman's Press and Gallery has been embedded in the printmaking community since 1979.  They hosted the 27th Anniversary Workshop in Summer 2008.  The classes provide an opportunity to get in-depth on processes within an intimate setting (10-15 people per class).  Students at the workshop are very diverse: community college, undergrad, graduate, professors, working artists, and some with no artistic experience.  Most people are printmakers, but there are also many artists working in other media.  The environment of Frogman's workshop blurs boundaries and brings people of different backgrounds onto the same page.  The instructors selected to teach the classes are internationally known for the mastery of their process and media.  As a returning assistant, responsibilities include set up and clean up of the entire workshop.  In the past I have assisted Kurt Kemp and Jennifer Sturgill in their "Monoprint Repeatable Matrix" class, Deborah Mae Broad and Jim Horton for wood engraving, letterpress, and books, Richard Peterson in stone lithography, Yuji Hiratsuka in color etching, John Hitchcock in digital printmaking, and Wayne Kimball in metal plate lithography.
